April 14th, 1865... It was Good Friday and quite possibly one of the saddest days in the history of our nation. President Lincoln is one of those rare people that will be remembered to the end of time. The 18th Indiana has the extreme honor to be a part of the Lincoln Funeral Coalition which takes place in Springfield, Illinois on May 7-8th, 2015. This event is the last of the 150th anniversary events honoring those who fell in the American Civil War. The train which carried the president's body from DC to Springfield has been re-constructed, as well as his hearse, coffin and the original gate to the cemetery. Even the churches will be participating by giving sermons from the time. The 18th will be one of fifteen batteries selected to fire a salute at the cemetery. What better way to end the 150's and start the 2015 reenacting season. As a token of my esteem for the members of the 18th who attend this event. each will receive a replica mourning ribbon similar to the original pictured to the left. It is a special honor for the battery to be a part of this event and the ribbon will make a nice keepsake. |
